You are cordially invited to participate in WebMedia/LA-Web 2004,
the Joint Conference emcompassing, in 2004, the 2nd Latin American Web
Congress and the 10th Brazilian Symposium on Multimedia and the Web, which
will be held October 12-15, 2004, in Ribeirão Preto-SP, Brazil.
LA-Web, a regional conference endorsed by the International World Wide Web
Conference Committee (IW3C2), is the Latin American forum where Web-oriented
research is discussed.
Supported by the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC), WebMedia has been, since
1995, the most important Brazilian forum for presentations, tutorials and
discussions on recent advances in technology related to Multimedia and the
Web.
The Joint WebMedia/LA-Web 2004 Conference will have activities from both
events. The conference includes full and short paper presentations, which
are, together with a workshop of thesis and dissertations, the most
research-oriented portion of the event. The event also includes tutorials,
posters and exhibitions, where both academic and industrial participants can
present their latest results, either as full products or as early
prototypes.
ENGLISH AND PORTUGUESE-SPANISH TRACKS
WebMedia/LA-Web 2004 will have two complementary tracks: English, and
Portuguese or Spanish.
Papers submitted to either track should properly place the work within the
field, cite related work, and clearly indicate the innovative aspects of the
work and its contribution to the field. A paper that is under review for or
has already been published or accepted for publication in a journal or
another conference is unacceptable.
In both cases, papers will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 reviewers from an
International Program Committee.
Accepted papers for the English Track will appear in the conference
proceedings, which will be published by IEEE CS Press, will be included in
the Conference CD, and will also be publicly accessible through the LA-Web
Web site (http://www.la-web.org) and the SBC Web site
(http://www.sbc.org.br).
Accepted papers for the Portuguese-Spanish track will be published in the
conference proceedings sponsored by SBC and made available at the SBC Web
site (http://www.sbc.org.br) after the conference. The same proceedings will
hold the papers for the PhD and MSc Consortium and Demos.
WebMedia/LA-Web 2004 seeks original papers describing research in all areas
related to the Web and Multimedia. Topics include, but are not limited to:
-Applications
-Architectures, Services, and Models
-Browsers and User Interfaces
-Computer Supported Cooperative Work
-Content creation, storage and distribution
-Digital Libraries
-Document engineering
-Electronic Commerce
-Games
-Interactive and Digital TV
-Metrics and evaluation methods
-Mobile and pervasive/ubiquitous computing
-Performance and Reliability
-Quality of Service
-Search and Data Mining
-Security and Privacy
-Semantic Web
-Visualization
-Web Engineering
-Databases, storage and retrieval
TUTORIAL PROPOSALS
Tutorials, presented in English, should target graduate students and
professionals and cover topics of interest to LA-Web/WebMedia.
Proposals should include: (i) indication of half day or full day tutorial,
(ii) abstract describing the tutorial, including a paragraph detailing why
the tutorial would be of interest of the target audience, (iii) description
of the target audience including prerequisite knowledge and experience, (iv)
high-level table of contents with text explaining what will be covered in
each topic, (v) speaker bio, (vi) A/V equipment requirements. Authors of
selected tutorials are expected to have the handouts of their presentations
sent to the organization 4 weeks before the event, so that they can be made
available to tutorial attendees in printed form. Tutorial presenters are
given a honorarium of US$500 for half day tutorials and US$1000 for full day
tutorials and will have the registration fee waived.
SHORT COURSES
Short courses, presented in Portuguese, should target undergraduate students
and cover topics of interest related to the Web or to Multimedia in general.
Authors of selected courses are expected to produce a 40-page text that will
be published in a volume dedicated to short courses.
Proposals of 8-hour courses should include:(i) an abstract describing the
course, including a paragraph detailing why the course would be of interest
to undergraduate students, (ii) a description of the target
audience, including prerequisite knowledge, (iii) a high-level table of
contents with text explaining what will be covered in each topic, (iv)
authors' biographies, (vi) indication of which author will present the
course, (v) A/V equipment requirements. One presenter for each course will
have the registration fee waived and will receive accommodation and
transport.
FULL PAPERS
Full papers should properly place the work within the field,
cite related work, and clearly indicate the innovative aspects
of the work and its contribution to the field.
SHORT PAPERS
Short papers, presented in the regular paper sessions,
provide a unique forum for late-breaking research.
POSTER SESSION
Poster presentations provide an opportunity for researchers from academia
and industry to present their recent research, and to obtain feedback from
their peers in an informal setting. Moreover, they give conference attendees
a way to learn about innovative works in progress in a timely and informal
manner. We strongly encourage the submission of both preliminary and
advanced work in theoretical or practical themes.
DEMOS AND TOOLS SESSION
Demos are an important venue where both academic and industrial participants
can present their latest products or prototypes. They provide conference
attendees with hands-on experience with the newest and coolest Web or
Multimedia innovations and techniques.
PhD and MSc WORKSHOP
Students may submit their ongoing work, presented in English, Spanish or
Portuguese, to be evaluated for presentation on the PhD and MSc Workshop. We
expect this to be an unique opportunity for graduate students to receive
important feedback with respect to their ongoing work related to the Web or
to Multimedia in general.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH WORKSHOP
Undergraduate Students may submit their ongoing work, presented in English,
Spanish or Portuguese, to be evaluated for presentation on the Undergraduate
Research Workshop. We expect this to be an unique opportunity for students
to report their work related to the Web or to Multimedia in general. We strongly
encourage the submission of both theoretical or practical work.
WCSCW 2004
LA-Web/Webmedia will also host the Brazilian Workshop on Technologies for
Collaboration -- WCSCW 2004, where researches will have a unique opportunity
to report and discuss work, associated with this area, that is being carried
out by the community. The papers from this workshop will also be peer
reviewed and published in the proceedings by SBC (only). The event has its
own organization and deadlines as detailed in
http://www.uniriotec.br/~wcscw.
