I will give precise explanation of what the problem in the title means. This will involve an excursion through manifolds (and operators) on manifolds with conical singularities and manifolds with edge singularities (really ``wedges''), and the meaning of boundary values. I will describe work done jointly with Juan Gil on determining the domain of the Friedrichs extension of a general elliptic semi-bounded operator on a manifold with conical singularities, and of work with Thomas Krainer on the Friedrichs extension of a semi-bounded elliptic second order operator (with some additional small but annoying additional conditions) on a manifold with wedges. The talk intends to be descriptive of the fundamental points that need to be addressed.
