Presentation

The Instituto de Ciências Matemáticas e de Computação (ICMC-USP) is one of the most important Brazilian institutions with activities in the fields of Applied Mathematics, Computer Sciences, Computing Systems, Informatics, Mathematics and Statistics. It has activities which incorporate both the development of scientific research and the formation and training of human resources to act in these fields and their related areas.

ICMC is located in the city of São Carlos. It is a university city with 220,000 inhabitants, situated in the center of the state of São Paulo (230 km north of the city of São Paulo) in a region with a very pleasant climate. It has two important public universities and important industries. The name of our city is traditionally associated with the innovation and the development of high level technology, incubators and technology-based companies.

The institute was created in 1971, originating from departments of the São Carlos Engineering School. Today, it occupies an area of about 14,000 m² in the two campuses of USP, is organized in four departments and has nearly 150 faculty members, all holding a PhD degree. Besides the disciplines offered to the architecture, engineering, physics and chemistry courses, ICMC also offers eight undergraduate courses and two graduate programs (master and doctoral levels), with a total of 1,228 undergraduate and 411 graduate students. Its graduate programs were ranked among the best in the country and receive grade of 6 (of a maximum of 7) from the Brazilian Ministry of Education (CAPES).

To support its activities, ICMC has a technical and administrative staff with about 110 qualified members working in a nice atmosphere including very modern and well-equipped facilities, with multimedia classrooms, seminar rooms, two auditoria and a high-quality specialized library with about 140,000 volumes and more than 23,000 periodical titles. Its computer park includes 2,000 units and high-performance machines and clusters.

Research

The research and education activities at ICMC are recognized nationally and internationally, due to publications in high-qualified specialized journals, active participation and organization of its faculty and students in scientific events, joint projects and agreements with institutions abroad. The research groups receive constant support from the Brazilian agencies (FAPESP, CNPq, CAPES and FINEP), as well as from some international agencies through joint international collaborations. Also noteworthy is the ICMC collaboration with the industry, research centers and government agencies, which generates many technological products, with high economic and social impact. The main research lines are listed below:
