INFORMATION PRESENTATION ON THE WEB: UNLEARNING 500 YEARS OF KNOWLEDGE

Using "low level visualization" (the kind that can be encountered anywhere, anytime, such as street signs, advertisements, and Web pages), we demonstrate how within a mere decade (more or less) we have managed to "unlearn" (almost) everything we had painfully learned in the previous 500 years about good information presentation and design.

We examine three-four essential attributes (text, color, graphics, overall gestalt) and half-a-dozen common applications (presentations; computer screens; user interfaces & interaction; Web pages; traffic-, street-, and commercial-signs; printed material), and through numerous examples (which are, unfortunately, only a small fraction of what's out there) show how the advent of desk-top and Web-based publishing, people have forgotten all that had been learned before, and have been able to "commit the gravest crimes against human perception."
